The core of DDRPG uses a twenty-sided die (d20) to resolve challenges involving success or failure. Any time a character or creature attempts an action with an uncertain outcome, the d20 is rolled adding all modifiers. This is compared to the Difficulty Class (DC). If the modified die roll is equal to or higher than the DC, the action is a success. The higher the DC, the more difficult it is to overcome.
There are four basic types of rolls: Ability Checks, Saving Throws, Attack Rolls, and Spellcasting Rolls.
PROFICIENCY & NON-PROFICIENCY
The Proficiency Bonus is equal to a character’s level, the Non-Proficiency Bonus is ¼ character level (dropping the fraction). A creature’s Background, Folk, and Class determine if an action is Proficient or Non-Proficient.
ABILITY CHECKS
These are the most common dice rolls in DDRPG. These can be anything from moving a boulder to leaping onto a rope to deciphering a riddle. Ability checks are tied to one of the six Ability Scores. Ability checks are listed along with the Difficulty Class (DC) thusly: DC 11 Strength Check or Strength Check DC 11. A d20 is rolled adding the Ability Modifier and either the Proficiency Bonus or the Non-Proficiency Bonus.
SAVING THROWS
Saving Throws are reactive rolls used to resist or evade some harm such as a falling boulder, poison, or a spell.
ATTACK ROLLS
Attack Rolls determine if an attack hits or misses. To make an Attack Roll, the attacker rolls 1d20 and adds all modifiers to the roll. If the adjusted roll equals or exceeds the target’s Defense, a hit is scored and damage is inflicted.
SPELLCASTING
Some spells are simple effects; when cast the effects simply occur, and a die roll is unnecessary. However, some spells are conducted the same as Attack Rolls. In such cases the caster rolls d20 and adds the Spellcasting Ability Modifier. This is compared to the target’s Defense. If the Spellcasting Attack Roll equals or exceeds the target’s Defense, damage dice are rolled just like a normal attack.
